Sonim and Open-Plug partner to speed PoC implementation

Sophia Antipolis, France, Feb 1 2005 – Open-Plug has announced a partnership with Sonim, the leader in enabling today’s wireless data networks to deliver high-margin VoIP applications including Push-to-Talk, to integrate the Sonim Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) XperienceTM client into Open-Plug Elips.

Sonim has become the latest industry player to join the Configurable Phone Initiative, announced at 3GSM. Open plug is the latest vendor to work with Sonim's best of breed OMA-PoC clients, joining a group of existing partners including three of the top five handset brands. Founded on Sonim’s cutting edge development on their PoC 1 & 2 XperienceTM clients, Sonim’s new PoC OMA Client enables mobile operators to accelerate their PTT deployment plans with the security of complete interoperability. Sonim is a contributor of the worldwide consortium that submitted the PoC phase 1 specification to the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).

“Open Plug Elips enables Sonim to instantly offer our industry leading Xperience PoC client solutions on several chip set reference design phone platforms, and thereby proliferate PTT functionality over a large number of handset brands and models”, said Bob Plaschke, CEO for Sonim Technologies. “The Open Plug and Sonim solution is tightly integrated with core telephony functions, minimizing power, processing and memory utilization within a broad spectrum of devices.”

“We are excited to partner with Sonim and their best of breed XperienceTM OMA PoC client solutions,” said Eric Baissus, CEO of Open-Plug. “Through Elips, Sonim customers are offered a very easy and quick avenue for evaluating this class-leading PoC implementation. Once they make the decision to implement it, the application can be rolled out across different handset designs, including high and low end phones, with minimal integration effort.”

The ‘Configurable Phone Initiative’ to support the development of mobile phones with modular software architectures that are easy to adapt with new applications and user interface features during the life of the design – even while the phone is in the field was at 3GSM by Open-Plug, supported by leading players including Modelabs, Philips Semiconductors, France Telecom R&D, Sasken and Jaatayu. It uses Open-Plug’s ELIPS component-based Linux framework for embedded devices, which revolutionises the way software is integrated, validated and deployed. ELIPS efficiently interfaces with any native environment and allows developers to continue using familiar tools and techniques, thereby minimising additional investment and familiarisation time.

Members of the Configurable Phone Initiative are offered a complete development and deployment framework by Open Plug, including:

ELIPS SDK, providing a complete Software Development Kit to develop, integrate and download software applications on ELIPS enabled phones.

Complementary Configurable phones, consisting of a type approved phone platform, enabled by ELIPS on which application packages developed with the ELIPS SDK can be deployed. Access to the ELIPS Mobile Edition and Component data base, providing a complete application framework and pre integrated applications, including the latest MMI, Messaging, Gaming, Email, Browsers,……applications from Open-Plug’s application software partners.

The ELIPS SDK and configurable phones are immediately available from Open-Plug. Configurable phones can be provided in volume through the Open-Plug partner network at short notice as it uses typically existing mass-market phone platforms from existing suppliers.
